Summary: Collection consists of a broad range of materials concerning the Pueblo Indians of New Mexico. Includes letters, clippings, publications, deeds, and a variety of legal documents. Materials in the collection concern relations between the Pueblos and the U.S. Government regarding issues such as land tenure, taxation, religious practices and social customs. Collection includes an 1852 letter by Acoma Pueblo Governor Juan Jose Lobato concerning a visit by Apache leader Mangas Coloradas; photocopies of a contract and correspondence from U.S. Court of Private Land Claims Case 133 involving the Laguna Pueblo Land Grant; briefs from the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court involving legal action to quiet title regarding the Laguna Pueblo Land Grant (1920-1925); and transcripts of testimony from investigations and legal cases regarding sexual aspects of Pueblo dances and ceremonies, U.S. Government education of Pueblo Indians, and the use of peyote. Evidence of social conflict within some pueblos is apparent through testimony in investigations and a 1927 Progressive Pueblo Council circular. Collection contains materials on the following Pueblos: Laguna, Jemez, Zia, Santa Ana, Isleta, Acoma, Nambe, San Felipe, San Juan, Sandia, Santa Clara, Santo Domingo, Taos, and Zuni.
